A Celebration of Excellence in Education
More than a thousand guests gathered to celebrate excellence in education at the Fulton County Schools’ Legacy of Excellence Awards 2025, an annual event recognizing the district’s most dedicated educators, administrators, and staff. This year’s ceremony featured special recognition from the Yang Family Foundation, which honored seven outstanding STEM teachers and announced a major long-term investment in Georgia’s education community.
The event blended inspiration and celebration, with student performances, a parade of honorees, and a festive luncheon where teachers and district leaders shared stories of growth and resilience. The atmosphere was filled with applause, laughter, and heartfelt gratitude for those shaping the future through education.
In her remarks, Ms. Kristin McCabe, President of the Fulton County School Board, introduced Mr. Jinsong Yang, founder of the Yang Family Foundation and CEO of McKinley Homes.
“Mr. Jinsong Yang is the founder and CEO of McKinley Homes — a company built on innovation, quality, and a belief in the power of community. After coming to the United States from China, Mr. Yang turned his vision into one of metro Atlanta’s leading real estate development firms. But what truly sets him apart is his deep belief that the strongest foundations are not made of brick and stone, but of opportunity and education.
Through the Yang Family Foundation, Mr. Yang and his family invest in teachers who are shaping the next generation of thinkers, innovators, and problem-solvers — particularly in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.”
Mr. Yang, a Georgia Tech alumnus and Johns Creek resident, shared his journey from China to the United States and the transformative role education played in his life.
“I was born to parents with only elementary-level education. I was fortunate to be introduced to computer programming in high school and later receive a college education. Twenty years ago, I came to the United States to attend Georgia Tech. Education gave me direction and courage. Today, I hope to pass that strength on to others,” Mr. Yang said.
He then announced the launch of the Yang Family Foundation Education Fund, a $1 million philanthropic commitment that will provide $100,000 annually to recognize outstanding K–12 STEM educators across Georgia, with each recipient receiving a $5,000 grant.
“Education changed my life,” Mr. Yang added. “It gives me the opportunity to change others.”
Mr. Yang also expressed deep gratitude to his wife, Mrs. Luna Yang, whom he called “the quiet strength” behind the foundation’s mission.
Seven exceptional educators received the inaugural Yang Family Foundation STEM Educator Award:
Ms. Santana Allen, Woodland Middle School
Ms. Jessyca Armstead, Westlake High School
Ms. Kelsey Ferguson, Seaborn Lee Elementary
Ms. Mary Hobby, North Springs High School
Ms. Tiffany Jones, Global Impact Academy
Ms. Katie Townsend, Autrey Mill Middle School
Mrs. Krystal Rainey, Camp Creek Middle School
Their remarks reflected gratitude, humility, and a shared belief in the power of education.
“STEM is more than science or math—it’s a doorway to the future,” said Ms. Kelsey Ferguson. “Every child deserves the chance to explore and create.”
The Power of Partnership
The program was coordinated by Ms. Samantha Maxey, Director of Community Relations for Fulton County Schools, who worked closely with the Yang Family Foundation from the project’s inception.
“Mr. Yang is not just a donor—he’s a partner,” Ms. Maxey said. “This collaboration is filled with heart.”
Behind the scenes, volunteers like Shawna Li and Megan Chen ensured the event’s success through months of planning, outreach, and coordination.
Members of the McKinley Homes leadership team, CFO Andrew Gagne, VP of Sales Mary Mead, VP of Land Acquisition Henry Massie also attended the ceremony in support of the foundation, shared their reflections on the event and its meaning.
Lighting the Path Forward
Starting in 2026, the Yang Family Foundation will expand its reach statewide, investing $100,000 annually to recognize Georgia’s most outstanding STEM educators. A new online application platform will make it easier for teachers to apply and be celebrated for their innovation and impact.
“Building homes is our beginning,” reads the foundation’s vision statement. “Building the future is our mission.”
As applause filled the room, it was clear that this celebration was more than an awards ceremony—it was a promise: to keep lighting the path of education, one teacher, one student, and one community at a time.
